Party culture here skews young – under-30s (or the young at heart) head to The Praça in Vale do Lobo or further out to Albufeira. For good food, music and dancing without the very young crowd, Thai Beach Club in Vilamoura is the spot (book ahead). The Cheeky Pup at Quinta Shopping and Danos at The Campus are both great for watching sport.

Casual & Well-Priced
- Casavostra – excellent pizza, pasta and lamb chops near Apolonia; book ahead.
- Cheeky Pub – pub in the Quinta do Lago square, sport on TV, live Portuguese-Irish band at weekends.
- Don Giovanni – traditional Italian in Almancil, indoor/outdoor, opens 5pm.
- Italian Republic – great value, easy with young children.
- Marufo 1 & 2 – the best-value piri-piri chicken shack around; no bookings, always busy.
- Sr Frango – big, art-lined restaurant, open midday to midnight.
- The Shack – near the beach and lake, great burgers, good for kids.
- Tiramisu – fun poolside setting in Al Sakia, live music Friday evenings.
- Tony’s – good pizza and pasta in the Quinta do Lago square.
Mid-Range
- A Floresta – wide-ranging menu at a reasonable price, popular with locals and tourists alike.
- A Quinta – modern take on old favourites, country setting with sea views.
- Brava – small, excellent tapas; book ahead.
- Butchers – great steak near Almancil, good house wine and value.
- Casa Pituxa – family-run Portuguese, lovely dining room and garden.
- Gamboa – excellent meat and fish in central Almancil, the host sometimes brings out his guitar.
- Malveiro – home cooking in Vale d’Eguas, giant Mozambique prawns, curries and fish.
- O’Greco – Greek meze night; book ahead, the food keeps coming.
- Villa 11 (Loulé) – some of the best tapas around, well-priced wine list.
Fine Dining
- Alambique – extensive Portuguese and international menu, indoor/outdoor.
- BOTÂNICO – lovely setting, from the group behind Cheeky Pub and Tony’s.
- Cafezique (Loulé) – adventurous tasting menu in an intimate space; book ahead.
- Casa da Quinta – Portuguese and international, Wednesday evening music, a firm favourite.
- Parilla Natural – our favourite steakhouse, Uruguayan beef, the best outdoor setting around.
- Pequeno Mundo – tranquil setting, exceptional French cuisine.
- Check-in (Faro) – from the former head chef of Michelin-starred São Gabriel.
Michelin Starred
- Gusto by Heinz Beck – 1 star, Conrad hotel, Quinta do Lago.
- Henrique Leis – 1 star, terrace with ocean views, between Almancil and Loulé.
- Vila Joya – 2 stars, held for 20 years running – widely regarded as the best restaurant in the Algarve.
Beach Bars
- BJ’s – right on the beach near Quarteira, regular live music.
- Maria’s – hugely popular, live music Sundays, rooftop DJ and sunsets.
- Julia’s & Izzy’s – neighbouring beach bars, popular for over 30 years – go early or late for parking.
- O Antonio’s – great for fish at lunchtime and mixed grills.
- O Rocha Baixinha – great family run spot on Falésia Beach with easy parking, enjoy a beach walk then a wonderful lunch.
- Temperus – closest beach restaurant to Number 10, excellent, family-run.
- Thai Beach Club – the hardest booking to land, but the setting and vibe are unmatched.
- The Bold Octopus – great sundowner views from the restaurant or roof terrace.
Local Food
- Grilled sardines (sardinhas assadas) – big, meaty and a must for fish lovers, from a restaurant, the market, or the BBQ.
- Salted codfish (bacalhau) – a Portuguese staple, try Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá or à Braz.
- Cataplana – seafood and pork cooked together in a copper clam-shaped pan.
- Chicken Piri Piri – grilled, with a spicy chilli-garlic-herb marinade, the Portuguese classic.
- Pastéis de Nata – custard tarts, best eaten fresh out of the oven.
Wine, Spirits & Coffee
Wine: look out for Lagoa, Lagos and Tavira for good-value reds and whites. Esporão is a reliable full-bodied white or red. Vinho Verde is light and refreshing with fish. Our neighbours at Wine Emotion are happy to help – and if you buy too much, you can leave it in the garage wine rack.
Spirits & beer: Aguardente (Portuguese brandy) comes in several grades; Amêndoa Amarga (bitter almond liqueur) is a pleasant after-dinner pour. Super Bock, Sagres and Crystal are the popular local beers.
Coffee: Bica is a small strong black coffee (an espresso); Galão is milkier, served in a tall glass; Meia de Leite is half coffee, half hot milk. Standard international terms (latte, cappuccino) work fine too.
