Fire

Precautions

  • Don’t obstruct exit routes with luggage.
  • No smoking in the property.
  • Don’t drop cigarette ends anywhere when out and about – dry conditions raise fire risk.
  • Make sure the barbecue is safely extinguished after every use.
  • Keep flammable materials, matches and lighters away from sunlight and children.
  • Don’t overload electrical sockets or appliances.
  • Switch off appliances before going out or to bed.

If you discover a fire

  1. Raise the alarm – wake and alert everyone in the villa.
  2. Get everyone out by the safest, quickest route. Don’t stop for belongings or fight the fire; don’t open a door that feels hot.
  3. Protect yourself from smoke – stay low, take short breaths, breathe through a wet cloth if possible.
  4. Check everyone is out and accounted for at a safe distance.
  5. Telephone 112.

Electricity

Safe usage

  • Don’t use appliances with loose or damaged plugs, or frayed flex – contact Luis for repair or replacement.
  • Don’t handle switches or appliances with wet hands.
  • Don’t overload plug sockets.
  • Keep trailing flexes tidy.
  • Unplug electrical appliances during thunderstorms, especially TVs and satellite equipment.
  • Fuse boards: ground floor left of the entrance behind wood panel, basement in hot water/shoe storage, and on 1st floor landing.

Power cuts

If the whole area is affected, wait it out – use a phone torch, and if you light candles never leave them unattended. If only Number 10 is affected, check the fuse box for a tripped circuit breaker and reset it; for older fuses, please call Luis rather than changing it yourself.

Gas & barbecue

Number 10 is supplied by Rolegas; the barbecue runs on monitored off-site gas cylinders that should never run out.

  • Understand the lighting instructions – if it doesn’t light first time, turn off the gas and wait before trying again.
  • Turn off the gas at the main tap (near the BBQ) once finished.
  • Report any damaged gas hoses to Luis.
  • Don’t obstruct ventilation holes – risk of carbon monoxide.

Suspected gas leak

  • No naked flames.
  • Don’t switch electrical appliances on or off.
  • Contain a leak in the garden by closing sliding doors and opening front/basement/roof doors to disperse gas indoors.
  • Get everyone out to a safe distance and call 112.

Your pool

The pool is managed for you – if it turns cloudy or discoloured, stop using it and call Luis rather than adjusting the chemical balance yourself.

  • Know the depth in all parts of the pool.
  • Never dive in – it’s a cocktail pool, not deep enough for diving.
  • Never leave young children unsupervised near the pool.
  • Avoid swimming after alcohol, and avoid swimming at night unless well lit.
  • Plastic ware only around the pool – no glass or breakable crockery.
  • Wet feet on tiles are slippery – take care.

In an accident: if breathing normally but a back/neck injury is suspected, support them in the pool with head above water and call 112. If not breathing normally, get them out immediately, attempt CPR if trained, and call 112.

Windows, glass & floors

Glass safety standards may fall short of what you’re used to in the UK – secure open windows and doors, don’t climb on or lean against glass balconies. Floors are tiled and smooth; don’t walk in with wet feet, and clean up spills immediately as some surfaces stain easily.

Personal safety & security

Crime levels here are no higher than in much of the UK, but keep the same awareness you would at home. Report any lost belongings to the local police station, or call 112 for anything urgent. Our security company IBC runs a first-responder Fast Response Team – make sure you’re familiar with the alarm, panic button and codes (you’ll be given these with your keys).

Theft protection & drugs

  • Use the safe for money, cards, jewellery, passports and tickets.
  • Avoid all contact with anyone using or offering drugs – penalties in Portugal are severe.
  • Never leave valuables on display in the car, especially in town.
  • Lock valuables away or take them with you when shopping or sightseeing.
  • Don’t take valuables to the beach, and never leave belongings unattended there.
  • Thefts must be reported to police within 24 hours (an admin fee applies).
